Metropolitan Community Church: What You Need to Know?

Metropolitan Community Church is a Christian church who believes that God's love is for all people. Although we have other churches that are welcoming and affirming, MCC is really the first and oldest and largest denomination that is predominantly LGBT.

It continues to be very important for us to let folks know that it makes no difference to us who you are and where you come from. It is about celebrating God's love, and having not only a safe place, but a place that's nurturing. Metropolitan Community Church really challenges us to give back to the community and to walk the journey with all those who are at the margins.

Behind the Truth of MCC Worship, Beliefs and Practices

Metropolitan Community Church bases its theology on the historic creeds of the Christian church such as Apostles and Nicene creed. Every church is required to celebrate the Eucharist at least once a week, and also to practice open communion, but you need to be part of the Metropolitan Community Church or some other church to receive the Eucharist. Apart from that, the MCC allows its member churches independence in doctrine, worship and practice. Though worship styles vary widely from church to church.

Metropolitan Community Church sees its mission being social as well as spiritual by standing up for the rights of minorities particularly those of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The congregation has turned into a leading force in the advancement of Queer theology.

Many local churches are also affiliated with other national and international campaigns like Trade Justice and Make Poverty History. Among its social justice works, the congregation has a strong resolve for marriage equality for LGBT group. The founder of MCC, Revd Elder Troy Perry, performed the first same-sex marriage in the US in Huntington Park, California in 1969. In 1970, he filed the first lawsuit in the US seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriage, unfortunately Troy Perry lost that lawsuit but launched the debate over marriage equality in the United States. Today, Metropolitan Community Church congregations around the world perform more than 6000 same-sex marriage ceremonies annually.

Reverend Brent Hawkes and MCC Toronto were primary players in the legal action that ultimately brought same-sex marriage to Canada.

A notable part of Metropolitan Community Church's theology is its position on homosexuality and Christianity where it fully embraces and welcome LGBT people. In fact, most members are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, with many clergy being openly LGBT. Metropolitan Community Church fully affirms the ministry of both men and women, seeing them as equal. The recent election of Revd Elder Nancy Wilson as Moderator makes the congregation one of the few communions with female senior leadership.
